monday 7 june, Messina, Sicilia -

we have reached the border of Sicilia. in a couple of hours we'll board a ferry for Calabria. in these days since leaving Siracusa, we've had a taste of the trip. by now we've passed over 200km - mountain roads, heavy triffic, burning sun, rain, camping where ever we find ourselves at the end of the day. our equipment is not at all meant for travel. Valentina's folding tricycle was designed for a retiree to go 200m from home to market. i found my vintige '70s bike in the trash and put it back in service with various used parts - without changable gears. we carry a heavy load in mode gypsy/beverly hillbilly. Valentina is a strong Ukrainian woman however i am a waif of an aging artist. like the bikes my body was not designed for this trip.
at this point, instead of discoving that the trip may be too strenuous for us, we are surprised by how easy it is. we are experiencing a strong force outside of ourselves that pulls us ahead each day. when the road rises high and long and the load weighs heavy on the tires, we succeed in moving ahead. when we should be exhasted, the energy arrives to go on. when our muscles shoud be aching with the exertion of the day, we feel no pain. this mysterious force that blesses us is comprized of the love and wishes from family and friends and the smiles and kindness bestowed on us from those we meet each and every day along the way. this force, so clear that it's almost visible, is both the inspiration and the purpose to continue to our goal in Ukraine and for this we sincerely thank everyone who is joined with us in this endevour.
love and peace, liam+valentina

I believe that force of love you so beautifully describe is available to us all if we but set out on the road of our own destinies! Sending love for your inspiring journey! Patricia Dreame
